After running all my errands today, I called Tom when I was on my way home.

When we were done with our normal conversation, Tom asked, “So, can we go geocaching today?”

I paused, and thought, and answered, “Well, I’m not saying ‘no’.”

The day was perfect. It wasn’t too hot. It wasn’t to windy. There wasn’t a threat of rain, and it hadn’t rained so recently that Tom’s chair wouldn’t be able to travel through the grass.

I didn’t have to work.

I felt okay. Not jumping up and down for joy, but not ready to curl up into bed as soon as I arrived home, either.

So, once I got home and resituated, we loaded up into the van and headed out to a local park to find a couple caches.

Geocaching is always a team building exercise for us, as I would assume it would be for anyone who goes out with more than one person. But, obviously, with Tom being a wheelchair, being a team is a little more important.

And, uh, sometimes we’re less than perfect at being a team.

Our communication skills are sometimes a little … strained, also.

Needless to say, sometimes I forget that we’re supposed to be having fun. Go figure.

But, somewhere during the process of finding the geocache, and seeing Tom enjoying himself while being outside and away from the confines of our yard, I remember that its not about geocaching as much as its about enjoying our time together.

Corny, yes.

But, its the truth.

  7. Blue - We found two of the three we were looking for that day.

Angie - We’ll have to go some time. Maybe you and Steve can start going when he gets home, too!

Blogarita - We went to the park in our city, and then to a school down the road from there. I keep telling Tom that he should hide one, also. But we haven’t gotten that far.

Kate - It is awesome! Do you geocache?

Blue - I think your family would love to geocache. A GPS can be expensive, but there are some cheaper versions, too.

Robin - Its like treasure hunting, using GPS coordinates to locate the ‘treasure’.

  8. We haven’t gone Geocaching in forever. We need to get our asses out and do it.

Blue- I recommend the Garming eTrex Legend. Nice GPS, and you can find them for $100.

  9. Nobody - We don’t go very often. Our weather window of opportunity is a small one.

  10. It actually sounds like so much fun… and a great activity for Tom.

  11. Alexandra - It can be a lot of fun, and Tom does enjoy it quite a bit!

  12. Did you get a chance to play any Guitar Hero this weekend? I was playing Rock Band with Thing 2 and Kicked his tookie if I do say so myself. So much so we had to go buy a Wii last night… Yeah!!!

  13. I just learned recently what that is, it sounds fun! It’s awesome that Tom can get out and do that. Di you find it?

  14. Alexandra - I’m stuck on 17 out of 30 songs on the ‘hard’ level of Guitar Hero 1. Its literally driving me crazy. Don’t forget to post about the Wii!

Annie - It is fun, actually. Tom has to carefully pick the ones we’re going to search for, since most are not wheelchair accessible. We found two of the three we went looking for that day, though.

  15. I had never heard of geocaching! It sounds awsome, thanks for sharing. Now to get hubby out and about!

  16. I’ve been wanting to try geocaching. We have a GPS we got from my BIL. (I need to get online and find some instructions b/c I don’t even know how to turn it on.) We have some friends who have done it all over the world…it sounds like so much fun!

  17. I’ve never heard of this before. It sounds like it would be a blast! Do you have to leap tall buildings & get muddy to find the things?
If you can survive teamwork with your mate, my hat is off to you!

  18. TrishK - Yes, yes! Work on getting the hubby to play too!

Sally - It can be lots of fun! You should get started soon!

Jane - The caches could be as simple to find, like at the base of a tree in your local park, to as complicated as having to repel off of a mountain side. It all depends on the ones you choose to look for!
